⌈ CHARACTER SECTION ⌉

Character: Mipha
Age: unknown, most definitely over 100 (in human terms, I can only estimate around a "young adult" (17-20))
Canon: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Canon Point: Post-game, after her spirit departs Hyrule along with her fellow Champions

Background: Mipha's Zeldapedia page

Personality:

The quietest, kindest, and most gentle Zora in Zora's Domain was simultaneously the strongest and most brave. Mipha, firstborn princess of the Zora royalty, was revered for all of those traits while she was alive, and far after her death.

"Yesterday, I was awash in a pool of tears. I had nearly given up hope and resigned myself to being trapped here, as a spirit,
for the rest of eternity. But now you're here."

Trapped for a century as a spirit in one of the very tools meant to save the land of Hyrule, Mipha is long-dead by the time she is seen in present-day. The protagonist, Link, sets off on a journey to defeat the evil pervading the ruined kingdom, and in doing so, frees the spirits of those who were meant to be his fellow heroes-in-arms, dubbed Champions. Coincidentally a childhood friend of Link's, Mipha's soul is freed from a prison of evil's making and joins the resurrected effort to defeat the evil force brought her to her demise one hundred years ago.

The majority of Mipha's presence in the game is told through Link's experiences; so her personality is colored by her proximity to him. She is shown to be soft-spoken, thoughtful, and shy as she interacts with Link in past memories. Though the latter is due entirely to her romantic feelings for the Hylian, her other traits are a constant, no matter who it is that she is speaking with.

With Link personally, she strives to be helpful in any way possible to his cause; however, she is simultaneously hindered by her own feelings. Being friends since small childhood, she speaks frankly when talking about happily healing his wounds whenever needed, or the uncertainty of the battle ahead. But when she tries to steer the conversation toward confessing her love - having already crafted the Zora equivalent of a marriage proposal no less! - Mipha hesitates and, ultimately, fails to muster the courage to do so. Even in the group with the other chosen Champions, such as when they were first annointed and took a group photograph, she sought to become closer to Link and did so anxiously, becoming so nervous and stiff that she actually had to be told to take deep breaths and calm down. Her true feelings remain forever unsaid. It is only through her family's gift of her specially-crafted Zora Armor to Link a century later that he ever finds out.

"His kindness and determination to help those in need... His strength and skill... My heart is drawn to his. I am doomed."

After her death, this is no different. Her soft-spoken spirit is overjoyed when Link returns after a century alone, and outright admits how happy she is that they are able to meet again. However, her primary focus in that moment is of helping the effort against evil - her priorities must be in proper order, after all - and in doing so, she grants Link her power of healing, super-charged by her supernatural being. Yet, while Link trains against the evil abominations he'll soon face, Mipha tries again and again to voice her true feelings and fails every time. Her courage to admit what is so blatantly obvious is no match for her nervousness, even while her confidence in the face of true evil holds firm.

Though, even her kind and selfless nature could not prevent even the smallest feeling of jealousy toward Princess Zelda, whom Link was charged to protect and be with at all times. The Zora princess heard of this and was immediately crestfallen, adding more strain to the apprehension she was already feeling. Thankfully, despite this, it did not get in the way of Mipha's duties, nor did she allow it to fester or let it seep into her attitude. This, too, is but one fraction of her nervousness in revealing her true feelings. But she never let it hinder her relationship with Zelda, nor Link, nor her chosen path as one of the most important members of a war effort.

Still, Mipha vows to do everything in her power to protect Link with her healing ability. It is a promise she could not keep for one hundred years, but resumes immediately once freed. Even if she had no romantic feelings for him—even if they hadn't been friends since they were so young—there is no doubt that her vow of protection would still have been given. Mipha loves, cares for, and protects; these are the things remembered most about her life.

"But know this: that no matter how difficult this battle might get... if you—if anyone ever tries to do you harm... Then I will heal you. No matter when, or how bad the wound... I hope you know... that I will always protect you."

Being soft-spoken - literally, her voice calm and dream-like - doesn't mean she cannot be assertive, however. In the only interaction we see of Mipha alone with others who aren't Link, her shyness is nowhere to be found, and she speaks and questions with a confident ease to her tone. It's also where her love and guidance as an older sister can be seen for her younger brother, Prince Sidon. She asks of and directs him with the responsible air of an older sibling, taking on a stern tone in one instance, and a comforting, helpful one in the next. It's quite clear that she loves and trusts in Sidon deeply, even at his age, and is even responsible for his signature pose and catchphrase in present-day.

"Sweet Sidon. Should fate ever part us... I'm counting on you to protect our beloved home from harm. Understood? ... I believe in you."

Though there is only that one time we see Mipha without the presence of Link, there is plenty of evidence to support her kind but strong personality behind the scenes. Countless Zora remember her as a beloved part of their lives, and the oldest ones are so deep in their familial love for her that they greatly resent Link for her death. Her intelligence is remarked on by her royal teacher, Muzu; her prowess in spearmanship started strong and grew to be unmatched under the royal army's Seargent Seggin. Her healing power, unique among not only the Zora, she offered freely to anyone who was hurt, whether it be a wounded soldier or a small child's scrape. Each day, the Zora community mourns for the loss of a soul who they regale as the most selfless in the land.

It's quite easy to see what her kin are talking about, even from snippets of memories and her present-day spirit from beyond the grave. It's clear in situations beyond those that involved Link, Mipha was a competent person in-control of herself, holding her responsibilities high and completing her tasks with aplomb. She wasn't seen as a wonderful princess just because of her attitude, after all; though kindness dominates her being, a stern and disciplined Mipha lies underneath. And while her particular storyline is overshadowed by her love for Link, the other main focus is her eager willingness and conviction to help Hyrule's mounting efforts against the looming threat of Calamity Ganon's return.

Led by the kingdom of Hyrule as a whole and their aides of the Shiekah tribe, they unearthed four massive, ancient machines referred to as Divine Beasts, which laid buried and dormant for ten thousand years (as told by an ancient legend). One of the Divine Beasts was uncovered in Zora territory, Vah Ruta, and Mipha was immediately enamoured by the elephant-shaped behemoth. Though, to her fellow people, and even her father, Mipha's reaction first came as a surprise. Being described as reserved and demure since she was an infant, her reaction to seeing Vah Ruta for the first time can only be described as a fiery passion. And when the time came to find those who would pilot these mechanical beasts, Mipha volunteered despite the objections of her royal tutors and the heavy heart of her understanding yet troubled father.

"My heart knew at once what to do. I agreed without reservation. Calamity Ganon must not be resurrected. If he is, there is no way to ensure the safety of my people, or of anyone. I do not know what will happen. All I know is that if there is anything I can do to help, I must try. I must protect Hyrule."

The selfless act to volunteer as one of the most important front-line warriors of the oncoming war, however, was also tinged with selfishness. Mipha admits, more than once, that her choice was in part due to her wish to help Link in the battle against the Calamity. But even that is only a fraction of her readiness; as Princess of the Zora, she takes her duty to protect her people and land from harm, and the Calamity is the biggest threat that could be posed. Confident in her own strength as a warrior and healer, she knew she was the best candidate for the job among the Zora, and would not let the objections of her loved ones stop her.

It resulted in her death.

"Father, are you well, I wonder... I want you to know... I have always followed my heart.
I'm sorry I made you worry... I wish I could see you again... Even just once more..."

Yet even after she was lost to her people, in her infinite kindness, her spirit sought to comfort them. Though she was trapped within her Divine Beast, when the Zora tried to send her trident down the falls in her honor, her voice rang out to them; telling them not to grieve, but to move on and find happiness. Even in her one-hundred-year turmoil, she sought to make things better for her people.

Once freed from her prison and allowed control of Divine Beast Vah Ruta again, the conflict of her choices becomes apparent. With joy, she talks to Vah Ruta about finally being able to fulfill her duty as a Champion to help defeat the evil force; and in the same moment, overcome with sadness and guilt for putting her wishes before her family. But this sense of duty is far too strong for her to ever have given up on, even if she wanted to.

"I must go. Ruta and I have our roles to fulfill. We are both honored to be able to play the role of support. We'll annihilate Ganon together."

Her strong sense of conviction is what contrasts to her demure nature. She's easily underestimated because of her demeanor and tiny stature; even Princess Zelda remarks that she didn't expect Mipha to be fit for the role as a Champion. And the sacred trials to test her ability to connect with Vah Ruta did not slow her down one bit, either. With her expertise in spearmanship and no-holds-barred bravery, Mipha took down three Guardian Skywatchers (one type of, if not the most, difficult mechanical enemies to eliminate in the game, while playing as the chosen hero) without difficulty.

If everything Mipha is were wrapped up in a neat little package, it'd be full of mixed contradictions. Kindness and love overshadows it all, of course; but there is her soft-spokenness versus strength as a royal leader; her shyness around Link and her feelings versus her confidence in herself and her abilites; and even the gentle mannerisms that bely her aptitude wielding her spear against foes. And in everything that makes her, her, Mipha would have made an irreplacable, treasured leader of the Zora people...if she only had survived.

"There are many things I hope you will remember, but if you can't recall those memories, I suppose it can't be helped. As for me...I shall never forget..."

Abilities:
  • Healing - her most famous ability, and one that makes her unique from even her fellow Zora. With what is most likely a magic she was born with, Mipha can heal wounds just by holding her bare hands over them for some time. The healing power is coupled by a visible blue light that emenates from her hands for as long as the power is used. The wounds she heals leave no scars.

  • Zora - as a member of this species, she is incredibly adept in and underwater. Gills allow her to remain under the surface indefinitely. She is an exceptionally skilled swimmer, fast and graceful even against the strongest of currents — this includes waterfalls, which she can swim upward with ease. In addition, the muscle groups involved with such aquatic abilities extend outside of water in the form of being able to pull off acrobatic jumps, twirls, and flashy dives.

  • Spearmanship - Mipha had been trained from a very young age by the Zora Royal Army's best knight in the art of wielding spears. Her weapon is the two-handed Lightscale Trident, with which her prowess is described as being "in a class all its own". During her trials to become one of the Champions and prove her worth to pilot Vah Ruta, one of them involved defeating multiple airborne Guardians, which even Link has trouble defeating in present-day.

Alignment: Thras. Her primary conflicts are between the two key aspects of Thras—fear and bravery. On one side of the coin is her confidence, determination, and strength in herself, her combat abilities, and her readiness to defend her people and country from evil. On the other side is her anxiety, timidity, and shyness with not only her demure nature, but the person she loves and her wish to be with him that she just can't spit out.

Other: Having departed Hyrule as a spirit, Mipha won't have anything on her person except her Champion sash and jewelry when she comes to Empatheias.
